Camp wow

LB just made it back from camp today. Hair with remnants of the mud pit, bruises from paintball, and a nasty rash on his chest that he says is from the recurrent friction of grass from a huge, soapy tarp dubbed the “slip and slide”, his raspy voice was the dot on the exclamation of fun he had on the ride home. He spoke of obstacle courses, beach and pond play, canoeing, raft building, and a song.

“You know Mom, my counselor had an Ipod with hundreds of songs on it, Christian songs. Really good ones.” I asked further about the “no electronics” rule, which apparently applies to only campers (for good reason). “He let the songs play softly at night, and we would hear some of them a few times. There was one that really hit me. The song was called “Let it Rain” by Michael W. Smith. There is one line in that song I can’t forget. It goes ‘Mountains melt like wax before the Lord.'” We were both quiet as we reflected on those powerful words. Because his voice was so worn out from a weak of yelling for joy, praise and egging on his cabin in team play, I wasn’t sure if it was LB’s repeating or my own whispering of the words again “Mountains melt like wax before the Lord.”

Of all of the high ropes, mountain boarding (yes, I said mountain boarding), and a $500 week of adventure for which LB had earned every earnest penny over the year himself, I was actually hearing my teenage boy say that the thing that stuck with him from the past week was the line from a song.  I know I will be pondering the words of this song, and the wonder of God all of my life. Melting mountains like wax is nothing, compared to melting a teenage boys’ heart.

Let It Rain

Michael W. Smith

Let it rain, let it rain.
Open the floodgates of Heaven

The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad
Let the distance shores rejoice
Clouds and thick darkness surround him
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne
A fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side
His lightning lights up the world
The earth sees and trembles
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord
Before the Lord of all the earth
The Heavens proclaim His righteousness
And all peoples will see His Glory

We want to see Your Glory, God!
Do you want to see His Glory?
Lift your voices, lift your hands!

Let it rain, let it rain.
Open the floodgates of Heaven
